9 Probation

PLLP provides services to prisoners around probation by supporting them before release, during probation supervision, and post-release, helping them navigate the requirements, avoiding breaches, and build stable lives. While certain functions (like managing probation itself) are reserved for statutory services (e.g., Probation Service / Probation Practitioner), PLLP offer valuable non-statutory support that complements official services.

10 Prison and Beyond

PLLP can provide "beyond the gate" services to prisoners by supporting them after release, helping with their reintegration, rehabilitation, and compliance with probation / licence conditions. This is often called through-the-gate resettlement or post-release support, and it plays a critical role in reducing reoffending and supporting long-term stability.

9 Probation

9.1 Pre-Release Support (Through-the-Gate Services)

These services prepare prisoners for probation before they are released:

  • Explaining probation licence conditions and supervision expectations.
  • Helping understand MAPPA (Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements) if applicable.
  • Providing clarity on exclusion zones, curfews, or restrictions (e.g., contact with victims).
  • Preparing for probation interviews and risk assessments.
  • Assistance with housing applications, job readiness, and financial planning.

9.2 Licence Condition Support

Helping prisoners and ex-prisoners understand and comply with:

  • Standard licence conditions (e.g., keeping in tough with probation, residence requirements).
  • Additional or bespoke conditions (e.g., attending specific programmes, avoiding certain people or areas).

Offering clarification and practical tools (e.g., tracking appointments, transportation planning).

Creating compliance checklists or simple "probation handbooks".

9.3 Recall Prevention Services

  • Educating individuals about common reasons for breach or recall (missed appointments, new offences, poor communication).
  • Providing tools or support to manage triggers, e.g., substance misuse, homelessness.
  • Offering coaching or mentoring on accountability and engagement.
  • Liaising with probation (with consent) to de-escalate early warning signs.

9.4 Probation Meeting Preparation

  • Helping clients prepare for key probation meetings (e.g., planning for risk management meetings or programme reviews).
  • Providing mock sessions to help them explain concerns or ask for changes to licence terms.

9.5 Appealing or Varying Licence Conditions

Advocating on behalf of individuals in contact with:

  • Probation officers.
  • Approved premises (hostels).
  • Local authorities (for housing).

Mediating if communication has broken down.

9.8 Support for High-Risk Offenders or Complex Cases

  • Helping individuals understand multi-agency risk management (e.g., MAPPA, IOM - Integrated Offender Management).
  • Support for those with indeterminate sentences (IPP or life licence).

Example Roles PLLP can undertake

  • Resettlement Coach or Peer Mentor.
  • Caseworker - linking up services and tracking progress.
  • Training provider - delivering life skills, ETE (education, training =, employment).

Important Legal Considerations

  • Any advice about probation law must stay within the bounds of general legal information as PLLP is not regulated to provide legal services.
